Asha + Radha {Newborn Twins} San Francisco Newborn Photographer

Photographing twins truly is a treat! I’m so used to “singletons” that when I get to photograph multiples, I am always so thrilled. I have photographed Kalyani + Stephen’s eldest kiddo, Sachin, for the last 3 years and it’s been wonderful to watch him grow from a toddler to a full fledged little boy…from conversations to questions to e-n-e-r-g-y! And now he is joined by two wonderful twin sisters – simply amazing.

Thank you, Kalyani + Stephen, for entrusting me with the girls’ newborn session! Here are some of my favorites from our time together.

Lauren Turns 1 {Cake Smash} San Francisco Family Photographer

Lauren’s parents honored me by allowing me to document their 2nd child’s entire first year…from maternity to newborn to 6-months and finally – 1 year! We capped off the celebration with a separate “cake smash session” just for Lauren and she rocked it! At first, she was a bit apprehensive…mostly looking at her mom as if to say, “Are you sure this is all for me??” She then discovered she could use the “1″ candle as a spoon (at the end of the day, she is still a lady and did not want to dirty her adorable little fingers with icing!), though her feet were not as lucky!

Chuck the Dump Truck {Behind the Scenes} San Francisco Photographer

Yesterday, instead of surrounding myself with shoots of little ones, I took gear into the woods…by myself…and practiced a particular lighting technique for two hours. Yes, two (and a half, actually). It got me thinking…when was the last time you gave yourself the chance to practice ANYTHING for two hours?? It meant that I left a list of edits at home…a dirty apartment at home…a growing “to-do” list at home…but it allowed me to hone part of “my craft” that I all too often ignore – artificial lighting.

I learned from the crazy-talented Zach & Jody Gray of Nashville, TN in 2010 how to basically overpower the sun using artificial light, but have never actually used it. I love the dramatic look and think it could be perfect for headshots, engagement photos or a very well planned corporate shoot. Thus, enter my practice time. I pitched a corporate client for an awesome outdoor concept, but wanted to set aside the time to go out and actually see how it would play out (how many lights do I need for this particular shoot? what type of lights are strong enough to overpower the sun in this exact location? what time of day is best? what is the ideal location?). Clients often think photographers are paid an exorbitant amount of money for “just showing up and clicking the shutter”…that our fancy cameras do all the work. What is easy to forget are the hours (and hours, and hours) that same photographer spent coming up with the concept, figuring out the logistics (outdoor/indoor/location/time of day) and envisioning the entire storyboard ahead of time so that, when the client shows up, it looks exactly as they see it…easy.

Alas, I digress from our subject of the day…Chuck the Dump Truck. My 2.5 yr old loooooves Chuck. Fortunately for me, he left a big one in our car that I could use as a model for the forest concept I wanted to test! Two things to note for these photos:
1) They were taken in broad daylight (9:30am)…it’s the lighting that makes it appear dark outside
2) I haven’t touched them in post-production…these are straight out of camera (SOOC), which is due to the “perfection” of using lighting appropriately (that and the fact that Chuck didn’t mind if his skin tones were a bit uneven and didn’t have any blemishes I needed to “assist”!)

Anyways, just wanted to share a bit of what I was working on yesterday since it’s a little out of the norm of newborns and baby bumps! Now…go ahead and set aside 2 hours (or even 30 mins) to hone something for you!

Bebe au Lait {Corporate Photo Shoot} San Francisco Photographer

Virtually every mama (and many mamas-to-be) have heard of Hooter Hiders and their parent company, Bebe au Lait. What you may not know is that they are a Bay Area company! I was introduced to Bebe au Lait when I did a maternity shoot for their Creative Director last fall. We hit it off and he then reached out to see if I’d like to shoot a campaign they had coming out for Summer 2012 (ummm, YES, please!). I will have a blog post next month with a reveal of those shots, but for now I wanted to share some “behind-the-scenes” images from our shoot.

As many of you know, I travel solo for 95% of my shoots. I don’t roll with an assistant, much less an entourage. It’s only for corporate shoots or model gigs that I bring extra peeps to ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible. For the Bebe au Lait shoot, I would have been a hot mess if I didn’t have the styling expertise of Erin Brennan (of Brennan Brand Strategy) and Chloe Jackman (of Chloe Jackman Photography). We had a very ambitious shooting schedule in two locations (Union Square and the terrace of the Cheesecake Factory) and Erin made she we got all the images from our shot list while keeping a tight eye on the clock before our models turned to pumpkins. Chloe, as a fellow photographer, worked her magic as my lighting guru and general sounding board for ideas throughout the shoot. We also had the magic wands of make-up artists from Shear Fashion Salon to make sure every hair and stitch of make-up was in place for each shot (and in windy Union Square, let me say they did not get a moment of rest!). We also had two wonderful models, 1 Bebe baby named Bob, and several members from the Bebe au Lait team to utilize as wardrobe stylists, set designers and so much more!

Although I can’t share our final images until they hit the public at the beginning of June (don’t worry – I’ll let you know as soon as they are “live” in the public!), I can share some fun action shots to let you in behind the scenes of a corporate lifestyle shoot with Brooke Bryand Photography!
